Sibley County Board to hold special meeting on Auditor-Treasurer
The Sibley County Board of Commissioners decided today to schedule a special meeting for Tuesday, June 8 at 6 p.m. in the courthouse annex basement. The purpose of the special meeting is to receive public input on whether or not to change the Auditor-Treasurer position from elected to appointed. More information about this topic will be published in next week’s edition of the Gaylord Hub.
Something really doesn’t smell right. May 6 Hub headlining article stated that the commissioners, at their Tuesday, April 27 work session, “decided to explore whether or not to appoint the County Auditor-Treasure in the future.” The last sentence of this article stated that “The public hearing will be held sometime this summer.”
However, the May 11 Hub online article now states that the “Commissioners decided today to schedule a special meeting for Tuesday, June 8 at 6 p.m. in the courthouse annex basement.”
But then again, if you pull up the boards Resolution # 2021-20 from their May 11 meeting agenda, it states:
“THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that notice is hereby given that public comment will be heard on the intent to appoint the Sibley County Auditor-Treasurer position at the Sibley County Board of Commissioners meeting on June 8, 2021 at 10:00 AM in the County Board room located in the Sibley County Courthouse at 400 Court Ave, Gaylord Mn.”
What happened to the EXPLORING of this? On my calendar, summer doesn’t start until June 20. This is just bing, bing, bing! It is being pushed through extremely fast. But also, when is the REAL hearing? 10AM or 6PM on June 8?
When I see that the County Administrator and Commissioners Koch and Cohrs think the Auditor-Treasurer should be a CPA, well, they obviously have blinders on as what the job duties are in that position; either that or they are being deceptive.
Most importantly is exactly what Sibley County Attorney David Schauer stated “elected officials provide check and balance” and this is such a true statement. But also, residents will be losing another of their rights and the ability to hold an elected official accountable. If Sibley County residents allow the Auditor-Treasure position go to an appointed pointed position, the County Administrator will dictate to this position, while now it is a check and balance between both positions. If this passes and nothing is done to stop it, I believe Sibley County will be part of the Met Council in the very near future. It will NOT be a done deal as there is so much more linked to it.
