Homicide north of Winthrop
The death of rural Winthrop man Dennis Weitzenkamp, on the afternoon of Tuesday, September 20th, has been ruled a homicide.
It was mid-afternoon on Tuesday when the Sibley County Sheriff’s Office received a call about an unresponsive person at a rural farm site about one mile north of the City of Winthrop (Transit Township). Upon arrival, first responders found 79-year-old Weitzenkamp deceased with what is being reported as “unknown trauma.”
According to a news release issued by the Sibley County Sheriff’s Office on Friday afternoon, an investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of death. Sibley County Sheriff Pat Nienaber reported that there are no suspects in custody at this time.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Weitzenkamp’s body was transported to the Midwest Medical Examiners Office for an autopsy. It was there that his death was confirmed to be a homicide.
Assisting at the scene was a Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) Special Agent, Minnesota BCA Scene Team, and a medical examiner from the Midwest Medical Examiners Office.
